I'm not sure if there was a post like this in the past, but if there was, could someone please direct me to it? In the meantime, plowing through!Discussion Post!
Let's talk about some of that rampant
in this fabulous series! I think it can hardly escape anyone's notice having seen this series even once, but Gankutsuou
is a series absolutely rife with symbolism left, right and centre. You can't pass a single episode without encountering it-- sometimes as obvious as a brick to the face and other times so subtle that you miss it entirely until a second or third go around. But the more I watch this series, the more I realise that no part
of this production was accidental-- everything has a purpose and a meaning, every tiny little last detail that you overlook had thought put into it.
So let me start the discussion off with some questions, though by all means feel free to ask your own questions to others in turn or ignore these completely and write about something else related to the topic. As long as it's relevant, it's fair game! These are just starters. I'll respond to this post with my thoughts too once I've put them together coherently *g*.
- What are your favourite symbolic devices in Gankutsuou?
- Did you notice something upon a re-watch that passed you by (even many times) before? If so, what?
- Are there parts/symbols that you still don't quite understand the meaning of? (I know there are for me!)
There's no right or wrong answer for any of these-- it's not as if there's any definite authority out there that has decreed "X IS DEFINITELY SYMBOLIC OF Y" so feel free to share your own interpretations with the comm! I've scoured the net for years for a discussion like this and never been satisfied with the results, so let's have at it! After all, are we a Gankutsuou
community or not? Let's get our fannish glee on!
